 Oral Language Development Series

Hameray Publishing Group is delighted to partner with the New Teacher Center to provide a brand new approach to supporting language learners. A product of a grant from the Hewlett Foundation to the New Teacher Center to support oral language development, a group of mentors and teachers created this series to provide repeated exposure to common language structures and vocabulary in context. These Oral Language Readers were designed to support oral language development through interaction with text, as oral language is the foundation of learning to read and write.

There are seven topics in this first series designed to represent common experiences, familiar objects and vocabulary for emergent readers and language learners:

  • My Family
  • Farm Animals
  • Pets
  • Our Senses
  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Celebrations
  • At School
Oral Language Development Series
Component Chart
First and foremost, a child's oral language structure is considered for determining which books in this series to use for instruction. The use of these books is intended for short-term language support in the classroom for English Language Development groups, oral language groups, and re-reading of familiar texts during independent reading. The child will be able to see the patterns in language structure by repeated encounters with these texts that have a gradient of difficulty.

Features:
  • New coding system to distinguish them from other text leveling systems. The main criterion for the coding is the oral language structure that increases in complexity.
  • Focus is on language development with text support.
  • Lateral books are provided for the earliest language structures that give the students extra practice with the same structure if needed.
  • Realistic objects are used.
  • Familiar content and vocabulary.
