Spanish Reading Recovery Books / Descubriendo la Lectura (DLL) Books for First Grade
What is Spanish Reading Recovery / Descubriendo la Lectura (DLL)?
Descubriendo la Lectura (DLL) is an early literacy intervention program designed to help bilingual early elementary students, especially first grade students, who are struggling to read and write in Spanish at grade level. The program is adapted from Reading Recovery, and designed specifically for Spanish and bilingual students who use Spanish as their primary language.
The program provides targeted, individualized instruction to Spanish and bilingual students, with certified DLL teachers working one-on-one with students over a period of time — typically 12 to 20 weeks.
The early intervention program is based on literacy research that claims that early intervention is critical for students who are experiencing difficulties in reading and writing. Research has shown that students who fall behind in their literacy ability early on in their education are at increased risk for long-term academic difficulties and may struggle with reading and writing throughout their later school years.
During the program, students receive specialized instruction, which is tailored to their individual needs, background, and current reading and writing abilities. As time goes by, students in the program progress in their ability to read and write in Spanish, eventually developing Spanish literacy proficiency at the level of their peers who are reading and writing at grade level.
Research on early literacy programs has shown that Spanish Reading Recovery / Descubriendo la Lectura (DLL) is effective in improving students' reading and writing skills in Spanish, and can help struggling Spanish readers catch up to their peers in Spanish, bilingual, and dual language classrooms. The program has been adopted by school districts in United States as an effective early intervention strategy for struggling Spanish readers.
